GRAND RAPIDS — A Bigfork man has been charged with three counts of felony drug possession in Itasca County, according to Itasca County Attorney Jack Muhar.
Brian Patrick Buria, 47, was charged Friday with three counts of felony fifth degree possession of controlled substances, including steroids. He also faces two petty misdemeanor charges.
The charges stem from the recent execution of search warrants on Buria, his residence in the 57800 block of Scenic Highway and a postal package addressed to him coming from Hong Kong. Buria is currently being on a 72-hour hold at the University Medical Center-Mesabi, due to the level of medications in his system when apprehended and concerns that he could be a threat to himself.
A warrant for his arrest was issued. He is expected to be taken into custody following the hold.
The Itasca County Sheriff’s Department received a tip that Buria was receiving controlled substances by ordering them off the Internet and receiving them through the mail.
The informant provided investigators with online prescription information. According to the complaint, some of the transactions were also corroborated by Buria’s credit card statements.
Investigators learned of a recent order made by Buria of more than 100 Valium pills from Hong Kong and were able to secure the tracking order number from the informant.
With assistance of the Federal Postal Service, the package was located and a search warrant executed on it. The inspection revealed 126 Valium pills, according to the complaint. The package, which had been labeled “electronics,” was resealed and sent on to Bigfork.
While the package was en route, an agent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) secured a search warrant for the person and residence of Buria.
On Thursday, law enforcement apprehended Buria at the Bigfork Post Office immediately after he signed for and received the package containing the Valium.
Investigators then executed the search warrant at Buria’s residence, where they seized various forms of steroids, oxycodone and Viagara among a variety of other illegal substances, some requiring prescriptions.
A search of the residence did not reveal evidence that Buria had valid prescriptions for some of the substances.
Investigators have also learned that Buria did not have a valid permit to import Valium from Hong Kong, according to a Federal Food and Drug agent who was at the scene.
Also located during the search were a small amount of marijuana and numerous syringes “which appeared to have been used to inject the liquid medications,” states the complaint.
Buria is expected to make his first court appearance on the charges next week.
